It feels so good

To just close my eyes for a moment.  The problem is, I was driving down I-70 at 80 mph.  Now it was just for a second, but man did it feel good.  Always at the wrong moment it seems that I can fall asleep in an instant.  Don’t get me wrong… according to Anne, I do fall asleep within 5 seconds of my head hitting the pillow.  But I feel like I haven’t had a good nights sleep since we brought home Riley.  It used to be Riley that got me up in the middle of the night.  Having to go out, or just whining – because that’s what puppies do sometimes.  Since Memorial Day… Riley has calmed down and now it’s Matthew with the regular wake up calls.

Anne does the 99% of the “overnight” feedings.  She does have easy access to his food.  A walking, talking milk factory.  I’m pretty sure she doesn’t enjoy being called that – but she is still going strong.  Needless to say, and she has reminded me of it more than once… although I wake up when Matthew cries in the middle of the night… she gets up and then stays up until he is back to bed.  I made the fatal flaw of expressing one morning to my wife how tired I was.  OOPS.  Evidently I didn’t know tired.  At the time I wasn’t trying to say that I was more tired… just that I was tired.  Anyways – I learned my lesson that day and now know that however tired I am… Anne is exhausted.  She has mentioned that she is more tired now than ever before in her life.  That includes – med school, intern year and all of residency including overnight calls with broken up sleep – 80+ hour weeks and a schedule that most people couldn’t imagine let along suffer through.

With all of that being said… currently she must be so tired that words can’t express it… because I know I am both mentally and physically drained.  I have been dragging my butt around for several weeks now and not really trying to “catch” up on my sleep.  It has finally caught up with me though.  I left work on Friday night and drove to from Hagerstown to Bel Air – just a quick 2 and a half hour jaunt with traffic.  Finally got to see my boy, KB, who was in town from AZ.  We partied it up like we were 29… and then next morning I felt like I was 79.

It's FRIDAY NIGHT

After just 4 hours of sleep I drove back to Rockville and although I planned to get a little more sleep, it just wasn’t in the cards.  Play time for Riley at the park and then Matthew when I returned… and then we were off to Finksburg for my nieces 1st birthday party.  It was a good time and my sister, Nicole, and Billy went all out with a lot of creative ideas for Addie’s party that Anne and I will likely borrow.  We then left the party and drove directly down to Glen Echo and met friends for dinner at the Irish Inn.  It was a long day and I think in total I logged over 250 miles in 24 hours.

But wait… I get to sleep in on Sunday… and it’s daylight savings time!  Not this time… I have a 5k run that I signed up for in King Farm.  BRILLIANT!

So the family was up and about early.  As I was walking Riley around the neighborhood before heading over, I started re-evaluating why I was running in a race while it was 37 degrees out.  Part of me wanted to bag it.  Part of me needed to see if I could shave the time off that I had planned to.  So off we went to “The Truman Show” neighborhood.  I’m happy to report that I was able to finish in 36:02.  More than 3 and a half minutes faster than my time 6 weeks ago.  Not too shabby.  And since I never did post the update… I did finally reach my first goal of 290 – just 2 weeks behind the initial plan of Oct 10th.

The Garraty’s met us out there as well and Susan ran alongside.  Although it wasn’t long before she left me in the dust.  The question is… who had the worse headgear.  Obviously I am not afraid to throw myself under the bus by posting this.

Yes... I wore that in public!

So after the race I headed home in anticipation of watching the Redskins get it handed to them for the 4th week in a row.  Check!  I predict that they may not win another game this year.  It’s been a rough decade to be a Redskins fan.  Better make that a rough generation to be a Redskin fan – but we will save that for another post.  Matthew and I both fell asleep during the game (he does love his football).  After some yard work and dinner, it was time to finally hit the sack.

So now on Monday night after a long day at work… why am I still up at 11pm?  I am tired of being tired but yet I don’t force myself to go to bed early.  I guess I will head up after I …
