A Good Case of the Mondays

My intention was to post a blog last Monday stating my new weight after I had finally broken through my rut. Unfortunately, I remained in that rut, and the number on the scale did not budge. I thought for sure after I had refocused on my diet that I would finally bust through the halfway point on my “journey”.

While the old Greg (also known as O.G. – but not to be confused with Original Gangster) would have gotten down on himself, the new determined me went the other way. I decided for one week I would do everything I could every day and not make any errors (i.e. – cheat). I lowered my calorie intake below 2,000 per day and committed to working out at least 5 days during the week. If for some reason the scale didn’t move, I would know that I did everything I could, and perhaps it would be time to seek out some professional help.

Well I did keep to the diet and got 4 workouts in. In addition, I also exchanged emails with an old college roommate who is now a trainer and I was able to gain assurance that what I was doing was leading me down the right path.

So now I am happy to report that I dropped 6.5lbs last week. Finally breaking through the half way mark. Finally getting below 270. And finally getting my confidence back. Weighing in at 265 pounds feels pretty good and now I am feeling the mojo to keep it going.

I did end up getting on the scale pretty early on Monday morning. 4:40 to be exact. We were up super early because Matthew needed to be at Children’s National Medical Center by 5:45. He was having what may be referred to as minor surgery by some, but when it’s your kid… nothing is minor. He was born with hypospadias. Don’t worry, there won’t be any pictures… but it’s a birth defect in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside, rather than at the end. Meaning they were operating on his junk.

Looking "worried" before surgery

We have known that this day was coming for months. However the reality of the situation started to really set in over the last week. I haven’t been sleeping well and there have been constant negative thoughts running through my mind of what could go wrong.

I am happy to report that not only was the surgery a success, but it turned out to be not as complicated as the doctor thought. In other words, no catheter for Junior (last time was a nightmare) and there was not even a dressing placed on the wound after it was surgically repaired. Just a few stitches and lots of bruising. Dr. Sparks fixed up our boy and also completed the circumcision during the process… so Anne and I like to refer to him as Rabbi Sparks.

Resting after

Normally Matthew is a very happy kid. Constantly smiling and always laughing. He always wakes up excited and eager to learn. Not only was he his normal self at the break of dawn, but as he came out of recovery he woke up smiley… in a little fog from the anesthesia, but it wasn’t long until the little guy was back to normal and making eyes with the nurse.

It's all good

All in all, it turned out to be a great day. Time to stop worrying and start living!
