Sweetness

There are several words that you love to hear when at the doctors office. So when the doc came in and pelted out “perfect” and “great” on Thursday, it made my pulse slow down while sitting in the cramped dark room staring up at the tv monitor.

I accompanied Anne on her now weekly visit to the perinatologist and got to see the little one moving around. She is very camera shy, much like her mother, but did manage to give us a quick profile view at one point.

We spent some time looking at her heart, and it’s both wild and amazing to see the 4 chambers pumping away. Her heartrate was exactly where it should be and the visual image was stunning. I am truly amazed what technology can do nowadays. One of the risks with pregnancy and diabetes is cardiomyopathy. It had been quite a while since I had been able to tag along to one of Anne’s appointments. And her doctor made a point to s-l-o-w-l-y clarify what he was explaining (just to me). One of the risks with pregnancy and diabetes is cardiomyopathy. Believe it or not, I actually knew what it was… but it’s like he knew I went to Radford and gave me the elementary breakdown.

He reiterated that everything looked great and Anne should just keep – keeping on. Of course that’s easier for both the doc and me to tell her. The discomfort level is perhaps at an all time high. From the inability to find a position to rest or sleep to having a cankle slightly larger than Rhode Island. With a job that requires her to be on her feet the majority of the day, she is toughing it out.

We are in the final stretch now, and since Matthew was born 4 weeks early… I am on red alert – DEFCON 5.  The doctor assured us that going early with one pregnancy does not translate to another. At this point though, I have my game face on. But of course I am not really playing in the game – just merely an assistant coach.
